Visual Arts

At HGCS, we believe creativity is a gift from God. From Preschool through 12th grade, our visual arts program helps students build real skills, see the world more carefully and appreciate the beauty of God's creation. Younger students explore a wide range of materials. Older students learn to develop their own ideas, think critically about composition and use their materials with purpose. Student artwork is displayed across campus throughout the year, featured in the Silent Auction and entered in competitions.

Our elementary art program serves students from Preschool and TK through 5th grade. Through hands-on projects, students strengthen fine motor skills and explore a variety of media, starting with sketching and drawing and growing into painting and more. They learn the elements of art and principles of design and study artists from many cultures and movements. Lessons also connect art to reading, science and history.

Students are encouraged to experiment, make their own artistic choices and approach their work with curiosity and responsibility. They learn that art is more than a finished product. It's a way to communicate, appreciate beauty and serve others. "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." (Colossians 3:23)

Art in our school community

  • Artwork on display in hallways throughout the year
  • Pieces for the 1st grade Spanish Immersion Bilingual Graduation, 3rd grade Wax Museum and 5th grade Moving On Ceremony
  • Student work featured in the annual Silent Auction
  • Centerpieces for the Thanksgiving Banquet
  • Artwork shared with children around the world through school mission trips

Students also practice stewardship in the art room by learning to reduce, reuse and recycle materials.

In middle school, students continue to grow their skills through art electives that connect creativity with faith and real-life skills.

Bible Sketch (6th) Students explore the story of Scripture (Creation, Fall, Redemption and Restoration) through sketching and watercolor. Each lesson pairs a Bible passage with a new art skill, so students respond to God's Word creatively as well as intellectually.

Sewing (7th–8th) A hands-on beginner course in hand sewing, sewing on buttons, repairing seams and hemming, plus safe sewing machine use and simple construction techniques. Students leave with practical skills they can use for a lifetime.

Our high school art program takes students from the fundamentals to a college-level portfolio. Along the way, students become more observant and learn to appreciate the beauty of the world around them. We hope they come to see God as an Artist and draw closer to Him through the process of making art.

Art I–IV & AP 2D Studio Art Art I → Art II → Art III → Art IV → AP 2D Studio Art Students begin with the fundamentals of drawing, painting and the elements and principles of art. Each year builds from there: creating complete compositions and trying new media, then developing original ideas through a sustained investigation series, and finally building a personal portfolio. The sequence leads to AP 2D Studio Art, where students create a 15-piece body of work driven by their own essential question.

Ceramics I & II Handbuilding with clay and decorative techniques like sgraffito and glazing, with an introduction to the wheel in Ceramics II.

Fiber Crafts I & II Crochet, cross stitch, sewing and quilting. In Fiber Crafts II, students make a quilt inspired by a study of the women of the Bible.

Art Appreciation An introduction to art through study, discussion and creation. It's open to every student, with or without an art background.
